This is a terrible tragedy. Nine people are now dead, and who knows how many with serious injuries. We won't know the full extent of this until everyone is discharged from the hospitals and the investigation is complete.

Do these trains pretty much operate on an automatic system? Anybody know? What exactly does an engineer do?

This is tragic.
The trains move very fast but I was never worried about an accident when I rode the Metro--I didn't think this was possible.

Deepest sympathies to the victims who were riding this train.
And I wonder, might the rear train operator have been texting messages? A bus driver rear ended another bus a few weeks ago while he was texting. Young drivers don't appreciate the dangers in being distracted while they are in charge of other people's lives on public vehicles.

What a tragedy. Best wishes to those who made it out, and the families and friends of the folks who didn't.

I've been listening to this on CNN live feed. God bless them all. Sounds really, really bad.
