As Think Progress pointed out Hatch’s concern about the fate of the two party system is an old argument first advanced by Ronald Reagan back in 1961. In reference to Medicare, Reagan said, “If you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.

Somehow the republican party has co-opted medicare as their own. Tea party protesters show up with signs admonishing Obama that he better "keep his hands off my medicare". Tell ya what though, here's a prophecy that's far more likely than Senator Hatch's prediction: In ten years republicans will campaign with scare tactics cautioning voters that their democrat opponents want to cut funding to the public option. And I'll laugh my ass off.

I think it more likely that the Republican Party is simply doing what they are being paid to do by their corporate sponsors.
